Image Quality Assessment Using the SSIM and the Just Noticeable Difference Paradigm

چکیده
The structural similarity index (SSIM) has been shown to be a superior objective image quality metric. A web-based pilot experiment was conducted with the goal of quantifying, through the use of a sample of human participants, a trend in SSIM values showing when the human visual system can begin to perceive distortions applied to reference images. The just noticeable difference paradigm was used to determine the point at which at least 50% of participants were unable to discern between compressed and uncompressed grayscale images. For four images, this point was at an SSIM value of 96, while for two images it was at 92, for an average of 95. These results suggest that, despite the wide differences in the type of image used, the point at which a human observer cannot determine that compression has been used hovers around an SSIM value of 95.

Just Noticeable Difference Estimation Using Visual Saliency in Images
Due to some physiological and physical limitations in the brain and the eye, the human visual system (HVS) is unable to perceive some changes in the visual signal whose range is lower than a certain threshold so-called just-noticeable distortion (JND) threshold. Visual attention (VA) provides a mechanism for selection of particular aspects of a visual scene so as to reduce the computational loa...
متن کاملA Novel Image Structural Similarity Index Considering Image Content Detectability Using Maximally Stable Extremal Region Descriptor
The image content detectability and image structure preservation are closely related concepts with undeniable role in image quality assessment. However, the most attention of image quality studies has been paid to image structure evaluation, few of them focused on image content detectability. Examining the image structure was firstly introduced and assessed in Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) measu...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Hierarchical Method Based on Wavelet and Adaptive Filtering for MRI Denoising
MRI is one of the most powerful techniques to study the internal structure of the body. MRI image quality is affected by various noises. Noises in MRI are usually thermal and mainly due to the motion of charged particles in the coil. Noise in MRI images also cause a limitation in the study of visual images as well as computer analysis of the images. In this paper, first, it is proved that proba...
متن کاملAn HEVC-Compliant Perceptual Video Coding Scheme based on Just Noticeable Difference Models
In this paper, we first introduce a spatio-temporal Just Noticeable Difference (JND) model based perceptual video coding (PVC) scheme which is completely compliant with HEVC. We incorporate into HEVC quantization process a JND model that takes into account both the temporal JND characteristics of temporal masking effects and the spatial JND characteristics of the luminance adaptation and contra...
متن کاملContent-partitioned structural similarity index for image quality assessment
The assessment of image quality is important in numerous image processing applications. Two prominent examples, the Structural Similarity Image (SSIM) index and Multi-scale Structural Similarity (MS-SSIM) operate under the assumption that human visual perception is highly adapted for extracting structural information from a scene. Results in large human studies have shown that these quality ind...
